What Inspired You to Start Learning Again?

Written by Morgan Kimball. Inspired by Emily’s story, an adult student at DRC.

Returning to learning as an adult isn’t easy—but for Emily, it was one of the most empowering decisions she’s made.

Emily is an adult student at Dyslexia Reading Connection (DRC) who courageously chose to step back into learning to build a better future for herself. When asked what inspired her to return, her answer was simple and honest: she wanted to improve her life.

A Desire for Growth

Reading and math had always been challenging for Emily. Those struggles followed her into adulthood, making everyday tasks—especially at work—more stressful than they needed to be. She knew she wanted more confidence and independence, and she also knew she needed support to get there.

Emily chose DRC because she believed it could help her strengthen her reading and math skills in a way that finally made sense. Taking that step wasn’t easy.

Building Confidence—In and Out of the Classroom

Since starting to tutor at DRC, Emily has noticed meaningful changes in her daily life. Her confidence has grown, especially in math. At work, she’s able to solve math problems more easily—and one day she didn’t have to rely on her phone for help!

But the impact goes beyond numbers and words. With every session, Emily gain self‑confidence. She believes in herself more, and that belief has carried into all areas of her life.

A Message for Other Adults

Emily knows firsthand that returning to education as an adult can feel awkward or even embarrassing. Many adults worry about judgment or fear they’re “too far behind.” But her advice to others considering this journey is clear and reassuring:

“You won’t regret it.”

She emphasizes that the tutors at DRC are supportive, kind, and truly want to help. While it can be uncomfortable to admit that reading or math is difficult, taking that step toward tutoring is never harmful—it only helps. With the right support, adults can strengthen their skills and build confidence they may have thought was out of reach.

Taking the First Step

Emily’s story is a reminder that learning doesn’t have an age limit. Growth is always possible, and asking for help is a powerful act of self‑respect.

At DRC, we are proud to support adult learners like Emily—individuals who choose courage, confidence, and a better future. If you’ve ever thought about returning to learning, Emily’s message is simple: it’s worth it.
